Activities at Home

Here are a few more things I like to do at home. You've already seen my passion for swords , hats and cooking. Nothing too exciting beyond those but they manage to fill the rest of my day...

Web Surfing

As you might suspect, I like to spend some time surfing the web. I've found a lot of neat things and a few have actually been useful. Unfortunately, I find more and more things to buy out on the net! It's almost as bad as the home shopping network.

Reading

I was never what you would call a 'reader' but I have gained an appreciation for the worlds that only your imagination can describe. Since the real world is too much with us, I prefer 'escapism' and stick with mostly fantasy novels, a bit of sci-fi and every once in a while a book I 'should' read.
If you like fantasy and would like to share book lists, just let me know at rburk@5aekdb5.org .

TV

Being a child of the television age, how could I escape the vidiot box? I have to admit, I like a lot of what can be found on television. You have to look but it is out there, especially on cable. My 'regulars' are the Start Trek series ( DS9 , Voyager ), Babylon 5 (predictable dialog but a good story), and ER . I'll catch Biography on A&E and any of The Learning Channel (except Operation !) when I can.

Movies

While not really at home (except when I miss them and have to wait for video) movie-going is another activity I got hooked on while living in LA. We used to go to movies about three or four times a week. I've cut back a lot on that and now go about once a month. I have a few rules about what movies I like to see that go along with my 'escapist' attitude as in reading. They are:

  1. Never watch a movie 'based on a true story'
  2. All movies must have a happy ending
  3. 'Films' are rarely enjoyable and should only be seen if they are a 'must see'-- e.g. Schindler's List
  4. Horror movies are a waste of film (except Halloween )
  5. Martial Arts movies are a waste of film and time

These are just my opinions and are not meant to offend anyone. Some of my best friends like horror and martial arts movies-- that's their problem.
